No overnight icing of roads expected

The snow has stopped, but some schools will be closed, or delay opening the doors on what looks to be a gray and windy Wednesday.

As snow fell on Tuesday morning in Paulding County, schools made plans to dismiss students early.

All Cobb County schools and offices will be opening two hours later than usual Wednesday, school officials said late Tuesday night. Cherokee public schools too. Forsyth and Hall schools will be closed.

No additional rain or snow was expected to fall overnight, and roads shouldn't ice up, forecasters with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City said.

"Roads should be fine in the morning," said Robert Beasley, adding the temperature is not expected to drop below freezing overnight.

"There's lots of cloud cover, which acts like a blanket and holds in warm air," and there's too much wind for much icing to occur, he said.

Wednesday will be bleak, however.

"It's not going to be a very nice day, windy, cloudy and cold ... temperatures may reach the 40s but it will feel like it is in the 20s," Beasley said.

A "big time improvement" will begin this weekend, with relatively balmy temperatures in the 60s expected Sunday and Monday.

Atlanta received about an inch of snow Tuesday, but more fell further north. Cherokee received 3.5 inches.

Hundreds of flights into and out of Atlanta were canceled as the storm moved into the state from the west.

Flight delays began building in and out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport late Tuesday morning. Some flights bound for Atlanta were being held on the ground at their originating airports until later in the morning.

Overnight, Delta Air Lines canceled 490 Tuesday morning flights in anticipation of the snow. Cancellations had surpassed 500 by 11 a.m., Delta spokesman Anthony Black said.

“As the snow continues to increase, the number of flights continues to decrease,” he said. “We’ll make additional cancellations throughout the day as we need to.”

Nearly all the passengers on the canceled flights were rebooked on flights later Tuesday or Wednesday, Black said.

AirTran canceled 83  flights into and out of Atlanta in anticipation of Tuesday's wintry weather, airline officials said Tuesday afternoon.

Atlanta Red Cross Responds To Freezing Temps

ATLANTA, March 2010 - As temperatures drop across our region, the Atlanta Red Cross is urging residents to take steps to guard against hypothermia and other emergencies common during severely cold weather.

“Winter can be a beautiful time of year in Atlanta, but it also brings quiet dangers such as brutally cold temperatures,” said Nancy Brockway, chief emergency services officer of the Atlanta Red Cross. “Everyone, especially senior citizens and children, should take precautions to guard against hypothermia this winter, and the Red Cross can help.”

Protect Yourself at Home:

  • Be careful with candles – Do not use candles for lighting if the power goes out. Use flashlights only.
  • Inspect fireplaces and wood stoves yearly - Use a sturdy fire screen with lit fires. Burn only wood - never burn paper or pine boughs.
  • Use generators correctly –Never operate a generator inside your home, including the basement or garage. Do not hook up a generator directly to your home's wiring. The safest thing to do is to connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not hook up a generator directly to your home's wiring.
  • Prevent frozen pipes - When the weather is very cold outside, open cabinet doors to let warm air circulate around water pipes. Let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing because the temperature of the water running through it is above freezing. Keep the thermostat set to a consistent temperature.
  • Check smoke alarms - Make sure alarms are working properly and replace batteries as necessary.
  • Be aware of overuse of electrical outlets - Don't overload your electrical outlets. Be careful that extension cords don’t create hazardous walkways.
